Children and Their Parent’s Living Standards

Dear Jack,

Dave Ramsey, who has been extremely influential in my professional and personal life, has a fantastic quote that is along the line of  “Children spend the first five to seven years of their marriage trying to attain the same standard of living as their parents – only it took their parents 20 years to attain that standard.”  I love this quote because it’s so true.

I hope to have provided you with a relatively nice standard of living – but I want to be sure you know it took work to get there.  Hard work.  Work I didn’t particularly want to do at times.  It didn’t just happen.  Proverbs 12.11 says that “Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread.”  We’ve gotta work – and you’ve gotta work.  Don’t assume that the standard of living you enjoyed while under your parents’ roof is going to be the same standard of living when you’re the one paying for that roof.  Don’t get off to a bad start in your life.  Please, please don’t go into debt to attain living standards.  Work hard, take Sabbaths, and look to God to reward your work.  Just don’t expect it to happen.  Till next time, Jack.

Sincerely,
J.
